Volleyball Programs Offered
We are committed to providing opportunities for our local youth to learn, play and excel at a level of volleyball play that is both fun and challenging. With this goal in mind, we have created different levels of opportunities, based upon the skills, desires and goals of the individual players- there is a program for every player.
Clinics and Free Gym for Volleyball are offered periodically throughout the year, particularly leading up to tryouts and new seasons. Space is limited for coaching clinics- be sure to sign up early to avoid being placed on a waiting list. Check the News & Announcement tab for more information.
Recreational House League Volleyball makes up the majority of our program- it is our most popular program. Our Spring house league provides opportunities for girls from grades 3 through 8 to learn and enjoy the sport of volleyball. There is no previous playing experience required to enjoy the house league. Our coaches will provide the training necessary for your player to understand the game and learn the basics of volleyball. This is also a great opportunity for parents to get involved as coaches or assistant coaches.
The league is broken down into three age groups:
- 3rd grade/4th grade
- 5th grade/6th grade
- 7th grade/8th grade
The DSYS Spring Volleyball House League runs from early March to late May. Typically, house teams are selected based upon a try-out assessment program (3rd grade/4th grade does not participate in tryouts). Assessments provide information to the coaches regarding the skills needs of the players and allow the coaching staff to select teams that provide the greatest opportunity for competitive play. House teams have one practice a week (1-1/2 hour) and games on Saturdays (typically two games lasting one hour each). Our spring season concludes with a playoff tournament, in which all teams participate.
Upon the conclusion of the regular season, we select an all-star team from amongst the house players. These players go on to represent DSYS at local all-star tournaments.
A registration fee of $150 per player is due at registration for the DSYS Spring Volleyball House League. Each player receives a personalized DSYS volleyball jersey in their house team color.
Travel (HEAT) Volleyball was introduced to bridge the gap between house league play and our competitive club program. Players are selected, based upon the Spring assessment tryouts for the house league. HEAT players practice and play on regular house teams, but assemble and practice together as a team once a week, and play against representative teams from other local area volleyball leagues.
HEAT players practice twice a week (once for house, once for HEAT), and normally play twice a week (one weeknight HEAT match and Saturday house games). Travel is local (usually Chantilly, Centerville, Vienna, etc.). This is a competitive program. It is intended for those players who are looking for an additional challenge. Our HEAT team from last year competed with our Club Volleyball teams and played against the same local teams in hosted play.
Monday- House team practice
Tuesday- HEAT practice and House Team practice
Wednesday- HEAT league match (local)
Thursday- House Team practice
Saturday- House team games
Besides the regular registration fee of $150 per player that is due at registration for the DSYS Spring Volleyball House League, an additional $50 is assessed for players who are selected and accept to join the HEAT program. The additional cost covers the additional travel league registration fees and the HEAT team uniforms.
Dulles South Youth Volleyball (Club) is our most competitive program. Last year was our inaugural year for club volleyball. We fielded two teams of combined 13 and 14 year old girls. Both teams played in local tournaments in the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association, where we finished in the top 50% off all teams recorded in the U14 division. We traveled to two regional tournaments (Washington, DC and York, PA) and ending the season by winning the Dave Lacey Travel League.
Players for the DSYS Club Volleyball team(s) are selected based on tryouts. Unlike our house and HEAT programs, which occur in the Spring, the Club volleyball season extends from the end of November to the end of May. Tryouts for Club occur in November (see News & Announcements for more info), with teams selected and practices beginning by the end of the month.
Club players practice 2-3 times per week. We average 4-5 competitions per month, ranging from tournament play to local hosted events. Most tournament travel is regional (usually Jessup, MD, Silver Spring, MD, Herndon, VA, etc.), but we also play locally in a travel league. This is our most competitive program. It is intended for experienced players who are looking to be challenged on a regular basis.
This year we are expanding our Club program to include one team each in the U13, U14 and U15 age groups (click the link below to access the CHRVA 2017 Age Definition Chart).
A registration fee of $25 per player is due at registration for the Dulles South Youth Volleyball (Club) tryouts. This cost covers the cost of registration and gym rental for the tryout assessments. Players who are selected and accept to join one of the DSYS Club Volleyball teams will need to pay the additional player cost share-we are set up as a co-op, meaning that the cost per player is the pro-rata share of the total team cost. We do this to keep the cost of the program as low as possible, and pass those savings on to the players and parents. We are still working on the budget to determine the actual cost per player for the 2016/2017 season. Currently we are projecting cost to be between $1000 - $1200 per player (roughly $650-700 for winter, and $400- 500 for spring). This includes tournament fees for 2 regional (two-day, out of town) tournaments, 7 local one day tournaments, 5 hosted events at our home facility, uniforms, equipment, coaching and facilities rentals. Each player receives personalized home and away DSYS volleyball jerseys, shorts, and practice t-shirt. Other team apparel is available for purchase.
Coaching Clinics for Volleyball are offered periodically throughout the year, particularly leading up to tryouts and new seasons. We are a local community, volunteer-based organization. We are always looking for new coaches who either want to connect with their kids through coaching, reconnect with the sport that they played, or just give back to the community and make a positive difference. You provide the passion, we’ll provide the training.
Although it may feel intimidating at first, coaching is quite simple: Provide an environment in which players can improve on a daily basis and encourage players to make the players around them better with both their personality and skill improvement. Coaches do not get fired for winning or losing. Coaches get into trouble when their team fails to improve. Everything a coach does should promote better play each time you touch the ball and a closer bond with your teammates. Winning is a result of these two pieces of the puzzle.
